Key Rules for Expats

WEP (Windfall Elimination Provision): If you receive a foreign pension from work NOT covered by US Social Security, WEP reduces your SS benefit. 30+ years of substantial US earnings eliminates WEP entirely.
Totalization Agreements: Work credits from 30 countries can be combined with US credits to qualify for SS. You need at least 6 US credits (1.5 years) to use totalization.
Non-Citizen Abroad: If you are a non-citizen living abroad, SS payments stop after 6 months unless you're in a treaty country or meet exceptions.
